fume: [14] Fume comes via Old French fum from Latin fūmus ‘smoke, steam’. This in turn went back to a prehistoric Indo-European *dhūmo-, which also produced Sanskrit dhūmás ‘smoke’ and Russian and Polish dym ‘smoke’.
