chew: chew: [OE] Chew, and its Germanic relatives German kauen and Dutch kauwen, can be traced back to a prehistoric West Germanic *kewwan. It has relatives in other Indo-European languages, including Latin gingīva ‘gum’ (source of English gingivitis).
